In the Roseland Ballroom, a diverse crowd surrounds me as I watch ?uestlove spin, standing in the thick of it all. The mood is positive and anxious, aside from a few complaining ladies behind me who lament my height obstructing their view. Classic and appropriate song choices from ?uestlove go unnoticed as everyone's attention is on Queen Alabama - The Band, eagerly waiting on the side and back of the stage.
While the crew is busy setting up equipment and sound checking, ?uestlove continues to work the cross fader, amplifying hip-hop beats. As Naughty by Nature’s “OPP” fades out, the hip-hop drummer grabs the mic, announcing his time is up and plugging The Roots' new album. The crowd falls silent as Ms. Badu's setup is prepared on stage. The anticipation builds with chants and clapping, but the show delays.
Finally, a video featuring Lil Wayne and Erykah Badu plays, followed by the band taking the stage with a simple 3-chord progression. The groove settles in, capturing the audience's attention. As time passes, frustration grows over the delay in seeing the main act. When Erykah Badu finally appears, all anger dissipates into wonder and satisfaction as the show begins.
Throughout her set, Ms. Badu captivates the audience, transitioning seamlessly between songs and engaging with the crowd. She showcases songs from her new album and revisits old hits, like “On and On” from Baduizm. Despite the stagehands signaling the end of the show, she continues, performing an encore amidst her fans.
Leaving the venue, I am completely satisfied after witnessing the artistry of Erykah Badu in person. Her performance was a testament to her talent and connection with her audience, leaving me appreciative of the experience.
